Faida Investment Bank: The Multi-Billion Lender Owned by Ex-Dagoretti South MP Dennis Waweru

Faida Investment Bank Limited (“Faida”) is one of the leading banks in Kenya. It was licensed in 1995 by the Capital Markets Authority (CMA) to operate as a stocks and securities broker. In December 2007, it converted into a full-fledged Investment Bank.

The financial entity is regulated by the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) and is owned by Jubilee politician and former Dagoretti South Member of Parliament Dennis Waweru. He was MP from April 2013 to August 2017 and served in various Committees.

Since its inception, Faida Investment Bank has grown to have multiple branches countrywide and has an associated company in Rwanda, Faida Securities Rwanda (FSR) Ltd. The firm is a full-service Investment Bank.

FSR is broker number one at the Rwanda Stock Exchange. It was incorporated in 2007 and began operations in 2009.

Faida Securities Rwanda was the first broker to sponsor an equity listing at the Rwanda over the Counter Market (ROTCM), the cross-listing of Kenya Commercial Bank Group, in June 2009. Since then, Faida has actively traded KCB shares on the ROTCM, sustaining market liquidity by ensuring a constant supply of KCB shares in the market.

Faida has also been active on the Rwanda corporate finance scene, developing a pipeline of investment banking transactions.


Services

Brokerage Services - This involves the buying and selling of shares (stocks) of publicly quoted companies as well as fixed-income securities on behalf of the investing public, at the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE), and the Rwanda Stock Exchange (RSE).

Markets and Institutional Research - Faida prides itself in a portfolio of both local and foreign clients. The bank's Research Department conducts fundamental research on quoted companies and uses established fundamental techniques to value and forecast future performance of such companies. 

"We, on request, avail our research findings to our clients.  The research department also provides market information, investment perspective and guidance to our clients on an ongoing basis,"the bank states.

Managed Futures - Faida has partnered with Paragon Global Markets, an independent introduction broker, domiciled in New York, N.Y. and registered with the National Futures Association (NFA), U.S.A. Through this partnership, the bank provides clients in the East African region with an opportunity to invest in Managed Futures, a broad base of alternative investment strategies in which portfolio managers, known as Commodity Trading Advisors (CTAs), use futures contracts as part of their investment strategy.

This particular investment product is for sophisticated investors looking for alternative investments to diversify their investment portfolios. The professionally managed CTAs generate returns by taking positions in financial instruments, currencies and commodities. 

This alternative investment offers Faida's East African clients real diversification from traditional assets and local currency investments.

Waweru is a former Chairman of the Kenya Investment Authority (KenInvest).  Assembly 

As a professional investment banker, Waweru has been instrumental in various industry developments and previously served as the Vice Chairman of the Kenya Association of Investment Banks and Stock Brokers (KASIB). In addition, he has played a role in the implementation of various Exchange initiatives that have sustainably grown the Stock Market.

Waweru is a Partner and Director of Faida Investment Bank. He holds an MBA in Strategic Management from Moi University and a Bachelor of Commerce degree. He has over twenty-two years of experience as an investment Banker.
