Doctors from the United States of America have made a massive breakthrough after a new drug administered on patients with cancer on trial basis brought back a 100 percent success rate , with every patient cured in the trial.

The study carried out at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York administered the antibody therapy known as Dostarlimab -made by British pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline- on 18 patients suffering from collorectal cancer for a period of six months.

One year after the antibody was administered, the patients were considered in remission as all tests conducted by doctors including physical exams, endoscopies, PET scans as well as MRI scans brought back the same result, that no new cancer cells had reformed sending the team into shock as they had never been this close to a cure.

The patients wept in joy as they had been unsuccessfully treated with traditional therapies and signing up to the study was their last resort.

With this kind of success rate despite the small number of  patients for trial, the drug could potentially be a cure for the one of the most deadliest common cancers.

"I believe this is the first time this has happened in the history of cancer. It's really exciting. I think this is a great step forward for patients," Dr Luis Diaz, one of the lead researchers of the trial stated.

The drug is made up of laboratory designed molecules that act as supplementary anti-bodies that combat colorectal, or bowel cancer which is one of the more severe and second common cancers with a high mortality rate , owing to the lack of specialized treatment for the disease, with patients reliant on surgery to remove tumours and chemo or radiotherapy to keep it away.

However Dostarlimab only targets those cancers that have a gene mutation that prevents cells from repairing damage to DNA as was in the case of the 18 patients. 

Doctors however remain optimistic that this new breakthrough will open doors to finding the cure to other cancers by determining whether this drug could tackles any other cancers in the same way.
