The Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) has announced the temporary suspension of all commuter train services across the country.

In a notice dated Wednesday, April 24, 2024, Kenya Railways noted that the heavy rainfall currently experienced nationwide had resulted in damage to some of the rail lines.

"We wish to notify members of the public that commuter train services have been temporarily suspended due to the ongoing heavy rains that have affected the rail lines.

"We are compelled to take these precautionary measures because the safety of our customers is always of paramount importance to us," Kenya Railways said in the statement.

The agency further assured to notify members of the public once services resumed.

"We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused".

The ongoing rains have caused major damage to transport infrastructure across various parts of the country. There have been several reported incidents of motorists spending nights in the cold after roads were damaged by flood water.

According to the Kenya Met Department, rainfall persisted across most parts of the country from April 15th to 21st, 2024, with increased amounts over the Highlands West of the Rift Valley and the Coast compared to the previous week. The highest seven-day rainfall total of 246.7 mm was recorded at Dagoretti Met Station.
