With unclear instructions from the State House, Western Sahara diplomats and diplomatic missions remain at a crossroads.

President Ruto sent a tweet through his official Twitter account stating that Kenya would not recognize the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic as a sovereign republic.

“Kenya rescinds its recognition of the SADR and initiates steps to wind down the entity’s presence in the country,” tweeted President Ruto.

Even though the tweet was deleted soon after, various questions have arisen on the reason behind that move by the State House.

President Ruto's communication team is yet to give the way forward on the issue

The Sahrawi president was among the dignitaries that had attended President Ruto’s inauguration.

Coincidentally, while introducing other visiting presidents President Ruto ‘forgot’ to acknowledge the presence of Sahrawi president Brahim Ghali.

Constitutional lawyers and diplomats are tasked with interpreting and explaining the rare occurrence.

Morocco has since released a message reinforcing the same message .“The Republic of Kenya has decided to revoke the recognition of the pseudo-SADR and to begin the steps for the closure of its representation in Nairobi,” the statement said.

Sahrawi has been in a longtime conflict with Morocco in a contest for the territory. Sahrawi has been seeking to obtain complete self-rule from its semi-autonomous state.

The conflict between the two entities has escalated to the United Nations and the International Court of Justice.

Some observers have argued that the president’s move could have been strategic and was aimed at aligning with Morocco for mutual benefits.

Key to note Morocco is a major producer of fertilizer a key agenda that the Ruto government seeks to resolve for the Kenyan farmer.

After a meeting with the Moroccan president, Dr.Ruto noted that diplomatic relations with Morocco would be speeded up in areas of trade, energy, agriculture, health, tourism et. Cetera for the mutual benefit of the two countries.

In line with the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations when diplomatic relations are severed the host country must facilitate the relocation of the diplomatic mission and their family members.

However, in a recent turn of events, Morocco reaffirmed the message deleted by President Ruto.

“The Republic of Kenya has decided to revoke the recognition of the pseudo-SADR and to begin the steps for the closure of its representation in Nairobi,” read the statement.
