The clergy has demanded that President Ruto honors his promise of creating a ministry of Christian affairs docket in the Kenya Kwanza government.

During the campaign period, President Ruto entered into a memorandum of understanding with the keen of the cloth promising them a special docket.

While addressing voters at the Kasarani Sports Centre, Ruto promised to lift the current moratorium on registering new religious organizations and ensure the freedom of worship

Part of the MOU was an agreement that the clergymen would be exempted from tax while purchasing commodities meant for the church as well as registrar of churches

However, this docket did not feature anywhere in the newly unveiled Kenya Kwanza cabinet. The 22-member cabinet majorly featured Kenya Kwanza Allie’s some of whom voters had rejected and a small percent of technocrats 

“We had a memorandum of understanding with the Kenya Kwanza government. Every cleric will earn respect in Kenya and ensure that the church and the clergy are protected,” a clergy member from Kiambu County.

The church leaders now demand to know the fate of the MOU they signed with president Ruto before elections spanning over a number of agendas.

Some aspects that were highlighted in the MOU include; registration of churches, economic empowerment, exemption from importation taxation, and being considered for posts in the society.

The MOU also featured budgetary allocation for churches and nomination to state jobs.

During the thanksgiving service conducted at State House, deputy president Rigathi Gachagua promised to remind the president of the actual Izard on of the MOU he had with the clergymen.

Apart from the clergymen that were left out of the cabinet slots, women only got seven out of the 22 slots promised by the President . This was a far cry from the fifty percent promised to them.

Ruto’s government has severally been accused of overdoing religion. Critics have warned that his actions are unconstitutional as Kenya is a secular state.
