Ruto Picks Moi-Era Strongman Rigathi Gachagua as His Running Mate

Deputy President William Ruto has today, Sunday, May 15, unveiled, Mathira MP, Rigathi Gachagua as his running mate ahead of the August General Election.

This comes as presidential candidates race to name their running mates before the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) deadline of May 16.

Speaking during a press release held at his Karen residence the DP stated that he will sign an executive order soon as he gets into office noting that the order will outline the roles of the deputy president assigned to him.

While announcing his running mate, Ruto described the Mathira MP as an astute debator, a successful elected politician who is a principled, resilient and fearless fighter for the right cause.

Among the shortlisted candidates were, Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, Kandara MP Alice Wahome, Speaker Justin Muturi, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, Tharaka Nithi Professor Kithure Kindiki, and Gachagua.

Mr. Gachagua has been a staunch UDA member who has also been an ardent supporter and defender of Deputy Ruto.

The lawmaker who has a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and literature from the University of Nairobi has political experience spanning 30 years.

He has previously served as an Assistant Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs, District Officer cadet, and Personal Assistant to the head of public service.

Gachagua has also served as a District Officer in Kakamega and Laikipia Districts, and a Personal Assistant of Uhuru Kenyatta during his stint as the Minister for Local Government.
