Chief Justice Martha Koome has reshuffled the leadership of the following judges in its latest announcement.
Justice Antony Mrima who was in the Constitutional and Human Rights Division has been moved to Kitale to serve as the Presiding Judge of the High Court from the 1st of August 2022.
Following Mrima's transfer a section of lawyers criticized CJ Koome’s move claiming mischief in the administrative action the Judiciary termed as routine.
Senior Counsel Ahmednasir Abdullahi, however termed the transfer as punitive saying Mrima may have been moved from the crucial Constitutional Division of the High Court at the Milimani Law Courts due to his decisions that have often been described as anti-establishment and radical.
"Punitive Transfer of Judges that are subtle apologise to the executive is back under the current regime in charge of the judiciary...sad we are going back to KANU days...Justice Mrima is punished for his judgments. May be it is my case against Kenyatta University," said lawyer Ahmednasir.
His transfer follows the appointment of Justice Luka Kimaru to the Court of Appeal.
Mrima's position has been taken up by Lady Justice Mugure Thande, to serve as the judge of Family Division to the Constitutional & Human Rights Division Court effective 1st August, 2022.
Justice Kanyi Kimondo will move from Murang’a and assume the position of Presiding Judge in the Criminal Division starting 15th September, 2022.
Among the transfer is Lady Justice Grace Nzioka who becomes the Presiding Judge in Naivasha with effect from 15th September, 2022.
She has been serving in the Criminal Division of the High Court yielding exceptional case management strategies which are expected to be replicated in Naivasha.
The transfers come soon after the appointment of a number of High Court judges to the Court of Appeal.
During the swearing in President Uhuru Kenyatta urged the seven newly appointed Court of Appeal judges to serve the nation with fidelity, integrity and without fear or favour.
The seven appellate judges included lawyer Gachoka Paul Mwaniki and High Court judges Achode Lydia Awino and Ochieng Frederick Andago.
Others were Mativo John Mutinga, Ngenye Grace Wangui, Kimaru Luka Kiprotich and Aroni Abida Ali.
The transfers are done at the discretion of the Chief Justice to address gaps created by the promotion of judges especially in busy High Court Stations.
