It was an emotional scene at County Hall on day two of the Cabinet Secretary vetting exercise after Samburu West Member of Parliament, Naisula Lesuuda was overcome with grief after during the vetting of Interior CS nominee Kithure Kindiki.

Lesuuda was detailing the dire situation in which residents live in the region, with rampant cases of cattle rustling and banditry that have crippled the state of security, and further led to the loss of lives during these territorial conflicts.

The MP decried the normalisation of these attacks, asking the CS nominee of his plans to combat the challenge once and for all as part of the Kenya Kwanza administration.

"I will request your indulgence because what I am about to ask is something that I know many of us share in this committee and I constantly get the feeling that office holders responsible for matters of security don't really understand or even are willing to comprehend the pain caused by insecurity in the north," she stated.

She went ahead to give accounts of two incidents where cattle rustlers raided residents in the constituency, killing two people and making away with cattle, which evoked emotions as she described the dilemma she was facing, whether to abscond the vetting of the CS nominees or crisis management at the affected areas to safeguard hundreds living in fear of the bandits.

"Just yesterday, while I was undertaking this very important national duty, criminals from the neighbouring constituency ambushed herders and drove away with cattle.

"As if that was enough, the criminals continue to be bolder by the day. This morning they attacked again, they killed one person, two people are missing, one who is actually my staff," she revealed in tears.

"What strategy do you have to end this menace once and for all so that as a leader I can execute my other national duties and concern myself only with security matters?” she asked Kindiki.

Kindiki in response noted that the matter of insecurity in the North  Rift demanded an intensive approach, promising to deal with the menace once and for all, even if it meant relocating to the highly unsafe region to understand the challenges the area residents undergo at the hands of the assailants.

"I will make whatever sacrifices required, even if it means coming to live in the North Rift. When criminals, cattler rustlers and terrorists don't fear the government, the culture of raiding and killing civilians and the police persists. Then the legitimacy of the State is at stake. As soon as I take office the number one assignment is to ensure we set our country free from criminals, bandits , terrorists and cattler rustlers," he vowed.

He further noted that he had strict instructions from the head of state William Ruto to see to it that the matter had been put to bed.

"I have been instructed to make sure that we deal with banditry once and for all in the North Rift," he assured .
