Looming Strike in Kenya Airways As Pilots Issue Notice

The disgruntled pilots have issued a 14 -day strike notice over unresolved grievances. They accused the management of failing to address their grievances despite raising their concerns with the KQ leadership.

The pilots had raised four grievances that include;non-adherence to Collective Bargaining Agreements, harassment of union officials, leadership issues, and withdrawal of the KQ staff provident fund.

The provident fund was withdrawn in 2020 on claims that the company had no money.

The pilots were dissatisfied that even with the resumption of business and the airline charging hefty fares ,the provident fund was yet to be reinstated.

The provident fund is supposed to take care of the pilots' welfare in retirement.

The pilots contracted by the airline expressed their disgruntlement through the Kenya Airline.

“KQ management team remains unperturbed and unbothered to find solutions to these matters that have continued to impact the pilot fraternity,” the pilots said in a letter addressed to KQ CEO Allan Kilavuka.

“Internal mismanagement, incompetence, and sheer impunity have continued to negatively impact the airline’s operations, financial viability, and the ability of the airline to maintain its image as the Pride of Africa. We believe that a major overhaul and the restructuring of the entire KQ board and management team will be necessary if the airline seeks to fly out of the current turbulence, the pilots added.

In the letter addressed to KG Managing Director the pilots also copied the Transport and Infrastructure Cabinet Secretary James Macharia and labour cabinet secretary Simon Chelugui, COTU secretary General Francis Atwoli and CEO of Federation of Kenya Employers.

The last strike was in 2016.
