Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala has publicly apologized for the controversial comments he made against the police implying that they were not well educated to serve the people of Kenya, maintaining that his utterances were taken out of context.

Taking to his social media accounts, the Kakamega gubernatorial hopeful was remorseful for his utterances, maintaining that the men in blue were an intricate part of society and their importance could not be ignored.

"I wish to categorically state that my remarks were taken totally out of context," Malala wrote on his Facebook page.

"Their importance to us cannot be underscored. It is in light of this that I wish to withdraw my remarks and apologize to our disciplined forces for the discomfort my remarks may have caused." the senator stated.

This was after the controversial remarks made by the senator during a rally in Khwisero describing police officers as ‘school dropouts’ caught the attention of the National Police Service as well as elicited public outcry over the reckless manner in which they were made.

"Is police work not just holding a gun? Provided these young people got two arms and legs, let them join the police service. A police job only entails handling firearms, which does not need training. Let those who have passed their examinations go to universities as those who failed and dropped out join the police service," Malala stated during the rally.

The police responded, castigating the leader for speaking ill of the profession that he himself was a beneficiary from.

“We as the NPS fraternity, including our dear families and friends, are utterly disappointed with such unwarranted and outrageous remarks, which we find too demeaning and only aimed at scandalizing a noble profession deployed in the service of the good people,” the NPS said.

"That, more disappointed we are as police, given that these unfortunate remarks were made by a leader we not only hold in high esteem but one we also continue to provide round-the-clock protection with pride and competency.” the service added.
