The Directorate Of Criminal Investigations(DCI) is on high alert after seven dangerous criminals escaped from police custody in a jailbreak staged at the Thika police station on the night of Wednesday, May 11.

The detectives announced their escape through their social media accounts detailing how the dangerous criminals managed to stage the escape, in a plot hatched by the offenders where one of the remandees feigned sickness, claiming that he has a running stomach owing to infection.

"Seven robbery with violence suspects are on the loose after escaping from police custody, in a daring break out at Thika police station last night. In an ingenious plot hatched by the capital offenders, one of the remandees feigned, sickness claiming to have a bout of diarrhea, as a result of a bowel infection," the DCI stated.

This signaled the other remandees to raise alarm, as according to the officer manning the cell, they pleaded to be allowed to accompany him to the toilets lest he soiled the entire cell.

The cell sentry caved in to the pleas and unbeknownst to him this was what the suspects wanted, as no sooner had he opened the door than the nine who were in the cell wrestled him to the ground, taking away his keys to the main door leading to the cells.

Eight of the nine suspects namely Livingstone Njau, Francis Matheri, Allan Mugai, Charles Mitaru, John Murege, Eric Ngigi, Arthur Kayemba and Bunton Mbugua all escaped in the 10 pm incident, with the ninth prisoner, Joseph Nyaguthii, nabbed approximately 500 metres from the station by traffic personnel who were on stand by while the rest disappeared into the night.

Their escape has left detectives based in Thika puzzled over the ingenuity of the criminals, but most of all questioning whether it was an inside job, as they managed to walk to freedom from the highly guarded facility.

The offenders were being held at the station from the  Industrial Area GK prison awaiting court appearance.

The officer who was attacked while on duty is aiding in investigations to determine the whereabouts of the suspects with the sleuths urging members of the public with information that could led to their arrest to come forward and make a report through their anonymous toll free hotline.
