New Twist as Ruto Implicates Matiang'i, Kibicho In Hate Speech Leaflets Controversy

With election day drawing closer,  Deputy President William Ruto and his Kenya Kwanza brigade have narrowed their attacks to the state administrators over spreading of election leaflet threats in parts of Rift Valley.

The Kenya Kwanza camp has blamed Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i and his Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho claiming  the two to be be the mastermind in relation to circulation of hate leaflets in Uasin Gishu and other parts of the North Rift region.

On Monday, Deputy President William Ruto who is the United Democratic Alliance Party flag bearer called on the outgoing Head of State Uhuru Kenyatta to take action against the two senior government officials.

"We cannot go from where we came from. The tactic of spreading leaflets so that people can differ is something that will not happen. You will not succeed because we have decided that we cannot go back and fight over politics," Ruto said during his campaign tour in Eldoret where he led his Kenya Kwanza team.

Ruto also alleged that Matiang'i and Kibicho have been constantly meeting with chiefs to manipulate the next week's general election.

Matiangi, however, denied the claims  by DP Ruto and his allies that the chiefs were being used by the State to bungle the elections as he termed the remarks as “ridiculous”.

Matiangi who has openly backed Ruto’s chief opponent, Azimio’s Raila Odinga, said his meetings with grassroot administration officials were purely because “they are colleagues”.

In connection to the matter the Ministry of Interior has announced the arrest of 8 suspects who are withheld in the police custody.

The eight are suspected of spreading leaflets and reportedly  warning some communities to leave Uasin Gishu ahead of the August 9 presidential election.

"I confirm that the national security council has ordered more resources, you will see more of our security teams in Molo, Kuresoi, Nessuit just to be ready to rise up to any challenge," CS Matiang'i said during a media briefing.

According to CS Matiang'i, said the culprits will be arraigned, a security review is ongoing to resolve growing anxiety in two regions of the Rift Valley.

"We have 8 suspects who we suspected of sharing the leaflets and they should be taken to court, none of those people are employees of the president,"  Matiang'i added.
