ODM Fronts Winnie Odinga , Suleiman Shahbal And Four Others As EALA Nominees

Raila Odinga-led Orange Democratic Movement has today unveiled a list of its nominees to the East African Legislative Assembly(EALA).

The candidates include ODM’s party leader Raila Odinga’s daughter Winnie Odinga.

Other nominees include Justus Kizito, Beatrice Askul, Timothy Bosire, Mohammed Diriye, and Suleiman Shahbal.

Winnie Odinga was rallying behind Azimio presidential aspirant Raila Odinga and was vocal throughout the campaign.

Deputy party leader Wycliffe Oparanys oversaw the nomination of candidates by the Select committee.

Suleiman Shahbal shelved his ambition for the Mombasa gubernatorial seat on an ODM party ticket to Abdullswamad Nassir.

Despite reports on Winnie Odinga being considered for the EALA post she continuously and vehemently denied the allegations.

“I have not applied for EALA nor has any official communication come from the party,” Winnie Odinga stated.

Before joining the Arusha-based assembly, the nominees will be vetted in parliament for vetting and approval.

Only nine slots are available for Kenyans, four to the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance and five to the Kenya Kwanza coalition.

Jubilee Party and Wiper party are also entitled to a slot each.

Wiper party leader fronted his son Kennedy who served in the EALA 4th assembly from 2017-2022.

Gideon Moi, the KANU party leader has previously expressed interest after failing to clinch the Baringo senatorial seat.

From the Jubilee divide Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni and Kanini Kega, director of the election, are also eyeing the coveted EALA seats.

Other notable names vying for the few slots include former Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar Hassan, former Elgeyo Marakwet Woman Representative Jane Chebaibai, Jude Njomo (Kiambaa), former Kajiado Senator Peter Mositet), Bonface Gatobu (Maara), John Mututho (Naivasha) and Ruth Mwaniki (Kigumo) former Laikipia County Woman Representative Catherine Waruguru, Falhad Iman and Anne Too among others.

Only Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo are yet to hand in the names of their representatives to the East Africa Legislative Assembly.

Responsibilities of the East African Legislative Assembly are;

• To be the legislative organ of the Community 

•Liaise with the National Assemblies of the Partner States on matters relating to the Community

•Debate and approve the budget of the Community, consider annual reports on the activities of the Community, annual audit reports of the Audit Commission, and any other reports referred to it by the Council

•Discuss all matters about the Community and make recommendations to the Council as it may deem necessary for the implementation of the Treaty

•Establish any committee or committees for such purposes as it deems necessary
