Kenya Kwanza presidential running mate Rigathi Gachagua is now claiming that the media took his controversial remarks on reforms on police uniforms out of context, stating that he meant no disrespect to the church and the police.

The Mathira MP was speaking in a rally in Kiambu on Friday, June 17 where he took the opportunity to clarify what he meant ,stating that it is publicly known that the particular Persian Blue shade of the police uniform is reserved for the PCEA Church women's group, which prompted him to pledge that in the event Kenya Kwanza takes over leadership, the uniforms would be reverted to their previous colour.

"The other day I said that we will change the police uniform and they twisted what I said. For many years that blue uniform has been for the PCEA Church specifically for the Women's Guild. Even schools do not take the uniform of other schools," Gachagua explained.

This was after public outrage after the prospective DP stated that the police service was under intimidation and oppression by current administration in the Ministry of Interior, and were forced to don the uniforms against their will , likening their uniforms to the women's guild uniforms and that he would ensure that they were scrapped off and the old attire reinstated.

"You have suffered under the hands of Matiang’i and Kibicho. We will change the blue uniform that our officers do not want and revert to the previous one. We will return the blue one to PCEA church. It is the uniform for the women’s guild," he said at a rally in Nyandarua on June 11, 2022.

Among those who called out the legislator were Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho, castigating him for disrespecting the church and the police service especially after his own stint as a government administrator who knew the procedures that go into change of uniforms for public officers.

“It is disrespectful for Gachagua, who as a former government administrator, knows too well the role of the Uniform Committee, to contemptuously dismiss the careful considerations that informed the new uniform.

“Uniforms are not just a matter of colour. They signify certain doctrines that must be appreciated whenever a merger occurs,” stated Kibicho.

Kenyan-Canadian lawyer Miguna Miguna also unleashed his fury on Gachagua, asking him to remain silent if he did not have anything better to say regarding the current challenges the common Kenyan was facing in social injustice, high cost of living and such issues.

"Mr Rigathi, this is a silly sideshow. No one asked you to change the police uniform. Focus on the agendas of 50 million Kenyans - jobs, human rights, democracy, rule of law, electoral and social justice. If not, shut up," Miguna stated through his Twitter account .
