The Standard Group is on the red over delayed payments of its staff signaling financial constraints.

According to a report, most employees from Editorial, management, and other departments have experienced delayed salaries over the past few months, while correspondents have gone months without payment.

The media house which publishes Standard Newspapers, Standard Digital, runs KTN, and radio stations among others attributed its problems to cash flow issues caused by a reduction in revenues, debts, and fraud.

An employee who sought anonymity told Business today newspaper that some of the staff received pay slips thrice with no money.

“It’s 6th of May. A huge number of Standard Group staff has not received their salaries. Some received their pay slips almost thrice on Thursday but no money. A few have, however, been paid.” he stated.

Following a protest to HR, the management issued a memo acknowledging the issue at hand noting that payment will be done as soon as possible.

“As you may be aware there has been a delay in paying salaries for senior staff. “Finance is doing everything possible to pay the salaries soonest by mid next week.” the memo reads in parts.

The company agreed to pay their staff in batched in a bid to resolve the situation.

The report further detailed that the company has been struggling to stabilize its finances over the past five years through cutting its wage bill and increasing revenue streams.

The Company, however, has continuously recorded losses from its businesses that include, Standard Newspaper, The Nairobian, 4 TV stations, and several radio stations with a section of veteran journalists ditching the company for other media houses.

The exits of the journalists have been blamed on the poor management of the editorial department and the poor financial performance a move that has seen employees seeking better opportunities.

Recently, political reporter Moses Nyamori dumped Standard for Nation Media Group, he resigned in early April, a month after City Editor Roselyne Obala left to join NMG as an assignment editor.

This left the Daily Edition of the Standard without a senior reporter, four months before the general election. Weekend Standard has only Jacob Ngetich left as the senior reporter.

A senior editor who sought anonymity said “Standard is good from the outside, Once you get in the mess becomes all clear. Even as many desire to join Standard, many want to exit.”
