Kerugoya GK Prison is in the spot over an early morning prison escape attempt that saw three inmates break out in the incident.

The escapees who are facing murder and robbery with violence charges managed to sneak out and were concealed by the dark of dawn when an alarm was raised leading the police into a search for the suspects who were to appear in court on Tuesday, October 11.

The law enforcers were able to rearrest one inmate while the other   two remain at large as the search continues.

The escape prompted Commissioner of Prisons John Warioba to visit the facility hours after it had happened in an effort to establish the circumstances that helped the inmates successfully get out of the facility undetected.

In fact, this is the inmates' second escape attempt as they were stopped by prison security who thwarted their jailbreak.

They are accused of allegedly killing a Kirinyaga University student early this year and were in remand awaiting trial.

Kirinyaga County Commander Matthew Mangira who is leading the investigations into their whereabouts is seeking to zero in on their location as cases of prison breaks continue to surge raising eyebrows over the security in these detention facilities.

In November 2021 ,three terrorism suspects made international headlines when they escaped from Kamiti Maximum Prison eliciting national panic prompting the government to offer a Kshs 20 million bounty for information of their whereabouts.

They were rearrested three days after their escape where they detailed their well orchestrated  escape plan that saw the arrest of  seven prison wardens after it was established laxity and incompetence played a part into aiding the escape.
