A lobby group identifying as Youth Advocacy Africa has written to Uganda's Education Minister Janet Museveni seeking clarification over the Nairobi gubernatorial aspirant Johnson Sakaja's degree that he claims was awarded by Teams University in Uganda.

This is line with the call to the incumbent senator to come forward and set the record straight regarding his academic credentials, which he maintains are legitimate and are a plot to spread propaganda.

Sakaja has maintained that he acquired a Bachelor of Science in Management degree from Team University in Uganda awarded in October 2016,  after a complaint was filed against him at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission seeking to bar him from contesting in the August 9 polls over his lack of the requisite qualifications.

The lobby group however is seeking clarification from Mrs Museveni as it claims that his degree from the Ugandan university was awarded to him for his completion of studies and not for his academic achievements.

“The degree awarded to Sakaja is not an honorary degree but an academic degree purportedly awarded after successful completion of coursework and other instructions for the award of the same,” the lobby group said in their letter dated Tuesday,June 14 as quoted by the Standard.

“From the available immigration services information in Kenya, Sakaja has only travelled to Uganda once, which was on October 17, 2014 and the visit was for parliamentary business, not for educational purposes," the letter continued.

Further, the group demanded that Team University be compelled to produce the legislator's admission letter, details of payment of school fees, evidence that he attended classes, and why his name was not on the list of the October 2016 graduating class as he claims.

This was to ascertain that indeed Sakaja's claims were true to avoid tarnishing the name of the institution that regards itself as respectable and has offered education to learners in East Africa.

“Our client is certain that your office will treat this matter with the importance and the urgency that it requires to safeguard the image of Uganda as a country that has traditionally offered education to many students in the East African Community," the group told Mrs Museveni through their lawyer, Waithaka Ngaruiya.

As if his woes could not get any worse, the University of Nairobi on the same day dropped Sakaja's name from its 'Notable Alumni' list which has raised eyebrows after his claims to have graduated with a degree in Actuarial Science from the institution.

The university had initially stated that he was and still a student at the institution but was yet to graduate.

“It is true Sakaja was admitted to the university and was pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science, studied from the first year up to the fourth year, but is yet to graduate,” the UoN communications director John Orindi stated on Monday, June 12.

Sakaja has stuck by his initial claims that he is certified to run for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat, alleging that his rivals were bent on tainting his image in a bid to sabotage his quest.

"You see how they have filed cases against me in court, I know I am learned and I am have my certificates, I know God will be with us and I will be in the ballot to become Nairobi's governor" he stated addressing a crowd at the Mukuru Kwa Njenga settlements during a Kenya Kwanza rally on Tuesday, June 14.
