Popular family amusement spot - Mombasa Go-Kart owners Reto Casanova and Dario Urbani are counting loses after their restaurant plane was razed down by fire. The plane - a C3; ZK-BBJ was used in World War II.

The duo had purchased the historic plane -  also used to ferry soldiers in New Zealand and across the pacific - and repurposed it into a fancy restaurant located within the Mombasa Go-Kart.

In an interview with New Zealand travel website Stuff Travel on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, Casanova revealed that the fire broke out shortly after they had experienced a power blackout.

"Some minutes later the plane was filled with heavy smoke. No way to go inside and fight the fire, and five minutes later the plane was under full flames. I assume that one of the video or audio equipment got blown up and caught fire," he explained.

At the time of the incident, no reveler was in the plane as staff vacated the premises to avoid being injured in the fire.

Casanova explained that his staff could do nothing but wait for response from the Mombasa County Fire department.

"As a go-kart track, we have plenty of fire fighting equipment. But the way the fire developed in a closed plane and got hot quickly in a way that molten aluminium was blown out. I ordered my staff to stay far and let things happen," he explained.

Prior to the incident, the plane was a premier chill spot for revelers in Mombasa who sought a unique wining and dining experience.
