At an expansive portion of land in Kaonyweni, Kithyoko in Machakos County lies the Mercy Servants of the Poor Foundation, an organization that cares for patients abandoned by their loved ones in hospitals.

The organization founded by Sister Mary Musembi has also given a home to people neglected by the society following birth deformities, and injuries suffered during accidents.

Sister Musembi who is currently housing 20 people whose relatives cannot be traced and those with mental disabilities began the project with an outreach programme aiming at catering to the needy.

With assistance from well-wishers, she was able to buy land and set up structures for the facility that is currently home to the abandoned with no places to call home.

Among those housed, 70% of the individuals are bedridden and in need of adequate care while the majority are unable to remember their names.

Well-wishers have flocked the facility in support of the programme, they have donated mattresses, blankets, bedsheets, foodstuff, and laundry materials.

Ms. Musembi's efforts towards helping the needy abandoned have been lauded by a section of Kenyans such as Milicent Awuor a benefactor who likened her efforts to St Mother Teresa.
