Nairobi, September 21

Fifty students of Ofafa Jericho High School in Nairobi were on September 21 admitted at a city hospital after inhaling smoke.

The students are said to have inhaled the smoke while putting out a fire that broke out in one of their dormitories, shortly after 8:30pm.

Dr Kanyenje Gakombe, the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Metropolitan Hospital in Nairobi's Buru Buru estate, told the press that the hospital received the fifty students and was administering first aid to the them.

Dr Kanyenje added that the hospital had the capacity to handle the emergency.

He further noted no student was at risk as none had suffered any burns or inhaled toxic levels of carbon to warrant an alarm.

Some students were treated and discharged immediately while those who inhaled larger volumes of the smoke were admitted for further examinations.

According to a police report at Jogoo Road Police Station, the fire may have been lit by a student who was protesting evening preps.

The police report details that one student defied orders from the teacher on duty to attend evening preps only to sneak back and set on fire one of the 'cubes' housing 20 students.

The student has since been placed in custody for further interrogation.

The report further indicates that property of unknown value was lost in the fire, most of which was students' belongings and personal effects.
