42 People Including 17 Children Dead After Old Kijabe Dam Burst its Banks Sweeping Through Households in Maai Mahiu

42 people among them 17 children have died after Old Kijabe dam burst its banks on Sunday night, April 28, 2024 sweeping through households in Kamuchiri Village, Maai Mahiu, Nakuru County.

Confirming the incident, Nakuru Deputy County Commissioner Mutua Kisilu revealed that several other persons have been rushed to hospital for treatment.

Officers from the Kenya Police, County Disaster Management, Kenya Red Cross and members of the public are on the ground, as search and rescue operations continue.

"Several people have been taken to a health facility in Mai Mahiu due to flash floods affecting Kamuchiri Village," Kenya Red Cross said.

Naivasha Member of Parliament Jayne Kihara who visited the area noted that relocation of persons to higher ground is ongoing.

"It's something we have not seen. The road is gone, the one going to Naork has caved in also," she said.

The raging waters resulted in a traffic snarl up along the Maai Mahiu - Nairobi Road as motorists were forced to spend the night in the cold.

A bus belonging to Easy Coach company was swept by the flood water, luckily, all passengers had disembarked from the vehicle.
