Delay in Reopening of Schools for Term 2 Expected in Tana River, Kisumu & Homa Bay Counties

Several schools will remain closed despite a nationwide directive by William Ruto to reopen all primary and secondary learning institutions on Monday, May 13, 2024.

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu on Thursday, May 9 announced that schools in Tana River, Kisumu and Homa Bay Counties may remain closed due to the devastating effects of the ongoing flash floods.

Machogu was visiting the Karen C Secondary School to assess it's preparedness ahead of reopening for term 2.

The CS announced that 95 per cent of schools in the country are prepared for the resumption of learning, adding that students whose schools will remain closed will be offered alternative learning methods.

Machogu stated that the ministry will reduced the duration of the August holiday to allow for the timely completion of the 2024 academic syllabus.

The government is expected to issues an advisory regarding the schools that will remain closed, and a timeline on their readiness so as not to inconvenience candidates and the rest of the learners.

The ongoing rains have left several schools across the country devastated by floods. From collapsed walls to mid-filled classrooms, reports indicate a total of 1900 schools have been affected.

While announcing the reopening of schools on Wednesday, May 8, President William Ruto ordered the National Government - Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) to lias with schools in repairing damaged facilities.
