Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta will head the African Union Election Observation Mission in South Africa in May 2024.

In a statement on Monday, April 29, AU announced that Uhuru will lead a team of 60 short-term observers.

The former head of state and his team are expected to assess the quality of the general elections in South Africa slated for May 29. The team will also assess whether the polls meet regional and global standards on the conduct of a democracy.

Uhuru and his team will also be expected to advice on the conduct of future polls within the continent based off of the success or challenges of the South African elections.

"The team will show support towards South Africa’s elections and democratization process to ensure that the conduct of democratic, credible and peaceful elections contributes to the consolidation of democratic governance, peace and stability," the AU statement read in part.

The team's assignment in South Africa is also meant to show the AU's committed support for the country.

AU will issue a final report after conclusion of the elections.

For Uhuru, this is no new feat as he led a team of 90 to oversee elections in Nigeria on February 25, 2023.
