Mack Rutherford has been making headlines since March this year after he made known that he would be the youngest person to fly around the world solo, and on Wednesday, May 18, his small plane landed in Nairobi.

The 16-year-old who is of British and Belgian nationality seeks to clinch the Guinness World Record currently being held by fellow Briton Travis Ludlow who was 18 when he completed the trip in just 44 days.

Rutherford started his journey near the Bulgarian capital Sofia in March, hoping to inspire aspiring aviators that age should not be a defying factor in the pursuit of their dreams.

"I'm hoping, with this journey, to inspire young people to follow their dreams," Rutherford said upon his arrival at Kenya's capital in his two-seater single prop ultralight aircraft at the Wilson Airport.

His project has come much to the contention of the plane's manufacturer, Shark Aero, who is in partnership with the young pilot to ensure that he makes it around the world safely but has expressed that they do not advocate for lowering the age limit for such an ambitious quest.

"Mack is no doubt a skilled pilot. However, we do not feel comfortable pushing the age limit to the lowest possible point for journeys where a certain level of risk cannot be avoided," the company said on its website.

With a background in aviation, Rutherford is confident that he will complete his circumnavigation as he is now almost halfway done, with four more African and Indian Ocean countries left, before he heads to the Middle East, Asia, and North America and finally returning to Europe.

He credits his father for instilling a great love for aviation in him, as he and his siblings were introduced to aircraft early on in their lives.

Rutherford first took the controls of an aircraft at the age of seven in the company of his father, and at 15, he became the youngest pilot in the world.

He is now following in the footsteps of his older sister Zara who hold the record of the youngest woman to fly around the world at age 19.
