Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has filed a motion of impeachment against Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha.

In a motion filed before the National Assembly on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, Babu accused Nakhumicha of subverting the country's medical standards and incompetence, citing the poor handling of the ongoing nationwide doctors' strike. 

"Pursuant to Article 152(6) of the Constitution as read with Standing Order 66, I wish to notify you of my intention to move a Special Motion for the removal of the Cabinet Secretary for Health from office on two grounds," the notice read in part.

The Embakasi East lawmaker accused the Health CS of failing to honor the existing 2017/2022 Collective Bargain Agreement (CBA), and instead threatening to sack the striking medics.

Owino stated that the inability to end the doctors' strike which is entering its third week is a show of incompetence on Nakhumicha's part.

The MP highlighted that since the start of the doctors' strike, several Kenyans have lost their lives due, and the health of many others deteriorating due to lack of medical care.

"The CS has further failed to appreciate the seriousness of the strike and has failed to provide a lasting solution to settle the demands of the medics including the hiring of interns/ trainee doctors and payment of salary arrears," the notice read in part.
