Some have accused Matiang’i of taking over the duties of William Ruto, the outgoing deputy president.

However, in a press briefing on August 5, Matiang’i told reporters that even state officials have a democratic right to support their preferred candidates.

He was keen to note that when his constitutional mandate called he would serve with no fear or favour of any political inclination.

During the electioneering period, the Kenya Kwanza team accused Matiangi of gross misconduct and abuse of office. This is because impartiality and political independence are of utmost importance to a state official.
