Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi has told off a section of parliamentarians backing his impeachment over claims of incompetence and corruption.

While attending a church fundraiser at Riiji Catholic Parish on Sunday, April 28, 2024, Linturi defended the national fertiliser subsidy programme, noting that it had greatly benefited farmers in the country.

The Agriculture CS claimed that he took control of the docket at a time when the country faced a serious food shortage - with fertiliser retailing for an all time high, which is not the case at the moment.

Linturi stated that he believes he's doing a good job, food prices are down, fertiler prices are low, and thus his 'conscience is clear'.

"I am in government, and the President understands the work that I am doing. I do not fear threats. I am working to empower farmers.

"Let us stay away from the propaganda. I am a believer and believer in the Bible," Linturi said.

"The Bible gives me strength. Some people want to bring other issues when I am succeeding in my work," he added.

Linturi reiterated his role in ending rice and maize imports into the country so as to empower local farmers. He claimed that opposing leaders are jealous of his success in the docket.

The CS stated further stated that he is committed to ensuring adequate and quality food production in the country and has full backing of President William Ruto.

"I am proud that Kenya is now self-sufficient in maize production. We subsidised fertiliser," he said.

Led by Central Imenti MP Moses Kirima, a section of Meru County lawmakers have defended the CS, claiming political witch hunt by propagators of Linturi's impeachment.

The leaders argued that Linturi has done nothing to warrant impeachment.

On Friday, April 26, Bumula MP Jack Wamboka seconded by his Lakipia North counterpart Sarah Korere wrote to the National Assembly Speaker, informing him of a plan to bring a motion of impeachment against Linturi before the house.

Wamboka who claimed to have backing of over 110 MPs, accused Linturi of overseeing 'criminal' activities at the Ministry of Agriculture - citing the 2023 sugar scandal and the latest fake fertiliser saga.

Korere argued that the CS is unfit for office and should never have passed the vetting face to begin with.
