President William Ruto on Thursday, April 25, 2024, presided over the official opening of the long-awaited Ksh9.6 billion Bunge Towers.

The building was set to be opened on April 19, but the event was postponed following the tragic death of Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) General Francis Omondi Ogolla.

While touring the newly opened building in the company of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, President Ruto raised a number of concerns regarding the architecture.

The President made reference to one of the committee rooms, wondering whether it is spacious enough to accommodate a full parliamentary committee - with every member seated.

“I thought that committee members are more than this, then how do you transact if the membership is full house?” Ruto wondered.

Addressing the president's concerns, Speaker Wetangula assured that the committee rooms are sufficient, adding that committees with more members would be allowed to use a special chamber with the tower.

President Ruto also visited a section of offices already allocated to the first batch of lawmakers to relocate to the building.

Bunge Towers is expected to bridge the deficit in office accommodation for the legislators.

A Schedule of Allocation prepared by the Clerk of the National Assembly will guide the relocation of MPs into the new building. The transition process will happen in two phases.

Phase one will involve moving members from KICC to the Tower or other alternative accommodation. MPs with offices at Harambee SACCO Plaza will also relocate as part of the first phase.

Phase two which is set to begin on July 1, 2024, will involve legislators with offices at Continental House.
