The recent closure of 43 bars and entertainment joints in Nairobi has elicited public outcry especially from the establishment owners, one of them being Citizen TV's own Trevor Ombija, who expressed his discontentment over the same.

Speaking at a meeting hosted by Nairobi Deputy Governor Njoroge Muchiri at the Ngong Hills Hotel, Ombija among other bar owners whose clubs and joints have been listed for closure over the noise pollution menace, opined that the county government not to be quick to condemn the fate of the establishments over the disgruntlement of a select few, and to only consider closure if at least half of the residents affected made complaints.

"When there is a complaint against a bar owner or a restaurant, let us have more than half of the people complaining. If the apartments are twenty, fifteen of them should show us their list, signed, and tell us this is the problem,” he said.

He recalled offering to install sound proofing as a last resort to an affected residence that complained about noise from his establishment even after reducing the volume levels, only to be declined, which cemented his point that only a handful of individuals were bent on calling for the closure of the establishments.

His comments did not sit right with a handful of people among them Kileleshwa Member of Parliament Robert Alai who called out Ombija for offering to soundproof homes as mitigation to the disturbance.

"If you want to see madness in the entertainment industry in this country, see this. The owner of a noisy entertainment joint in Kileleshwa offering to soundproof homes," Alai tweeted.

Former LSK president Nelson Havi was of the same opinion, reminding Trevor that the noise menace needed control.

"Trevor Ombija, if you are the noisemaker, you shut your mouth. You don’t offer to seal our ears. Noise pollution must be contained," he noted.

Ombija fired back at Alai, asking the legislator to be mindful with his words as he was not present at the meeting which the journalist noted was quite successful in finding solutions to the problem.

"Yesterday there were great steps made between the bar owners and residents associations on how to address the issues, your accusation is devoid of context because you were NOT there and that's ok, I am only interested in dealing with the issues NOT verbal abuse. Thanks Mhesh," Ombija stated.
