Woman Accused of Son's Murder Gives Birth to a Baby Girl in Court

Kithimani Law Court in Machakos County was on Tuesday, April 16, 2024 treated to a spectacle after a woman acquitted in the murder of her 19-month-old son, gave birth to a baby girl in court.

Virginia Mbinya Maingi developed labour pains immediately after her acquittal, attracting help from court clerks and other staff who called for medics from a nearby dispensary.

Upon arrival, the nurses delivered the baby safely with the help of the court clerks who had sought lesos to cover the mother and her daughter.

Virginia was later escorted home by police officers from Matuu Police Station after she had stabilised.

She was arrested on March 25 by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) following the suspicious death of her son. Heavily pregnant, she was detained at the Matuu Police Station pending conclusion of investigations by the sleuths.

Appearing before Principal Magistrate Paul Matanda on Tuesday, April 16, Virginia was acquitted of her son's murder after investigations determined that the infant died of starvation.
