The first road accident on the newly constructed Nairobi Expressway has been reported just days before it is commissioned for public use by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Photos of the scene shared on social media showed an overturned personal car and a section of the fence separating the lanes mangled by the impact of the accident.

It is not clear how many people were in the car, or if any casualties have been reported.

This comes after the Infrastructure Ministry announced that the road would be commissioned this month by the president, opening it for the public use between the Mlolongo area on Mombasa Road all the way to the James Gichuru exit on Waiyaki Way.

Infrastructure Principal Secretary (PS) Paul Maringa stated that the commissioning date was subject to President Uhuru Kenyatta’s availability for commissioning in his calendar.

Maringa was speaking before the National Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Thursday, May 5, where he affirmed that the road would be opened through orders issued by the President, quelling the rumors that it has been opened to a section of Kenyans for free despite the publicized toll fees required to allow passage.

Motorists will be expected to pay between Kshs100 and Ksh1,550 in toll charges, depending on the size of the vehicle and the distance covered.

The announcement was after some motorists shared video clips while driving on the 27-kilometre road, alleging that the road was open for free trials before it was commissioned by the president.

The road is also set to be in use for the Uhuru Classic Marathon slated for Sunday, May 8 ahead of its launch to celebrate its construction as part of the president's legacy during his tenure.
