The government has on Wednesday July 6, temporarily restricted commercial passenger vehicles (PSVs)  with a capacity of more than seven passengers from using the Nairobi Expressway way to improve safety and experience of the users.

In a notice sent to newsroom, Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia confirmed this following President Uhuru Kenyatta directive to open the Expressway for trial basis.

This week alone two road accidents have occurred on the Expressway with the latest one happening Wednesday morning  in Westlands involving a 33 seater matatu.

A day before over 20 people sustained injuries following another  accident at the Nairobi Expressway Toll Station at Mlolongo.

The temporary move is meant to give room for the investigations into the cause of the recent accidents and develop appropriate safety measures.

"Since the Expressway was opened to the public, there has been gradual increase in traffic volumes with many road users expressing satisfaction with the Expressway. However, Isolated safety incidents and road crashes have also been witnessed on the Expressway," said CS Macharia.

Macharia said they have installed rumble strips to warn drivers to slow down as they approach the various toll gates.

To curb careless driving due to speeding, the government has initiated enforcement of speed limits marked across its various sections.

"All motorists are required by law to to adhere to the stipulated speed limits. Any person who contravenes or fails to comply will shall be guilty of an offence and liable to a fine of up to Ksh.100,000,"  he warned.

He called on the drivers using the Expressway to maintain the required speed maximum speed of 110 Km/h.  This is the maximum speed applied in Kenya by law.
