Government Opts For Curfew To Save Troubled Kerio Valley

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’ion Friday 3rd June 2022, announced that the government is planning to impose a30-day-curfew in Kerio Valley and other areas in the North Rift region in amove to initiate an operation of massive disarmament in the troubled KerioValley.

 

According to Matiang’i, the operation willhelp curb a series of attacks that have left dozens dead and hundreds injured.

The CS stated that the government incooperation with the regional security team is planning two major operations inthe area including reorganization and deployment of security personnel.

 

Speaking in a meeting with Senior Securityand National Government Administration Officers at the APTC in Nairobi’sEmbakasi, Matiang’i said that his security docket is waiting for a nod from theNational Security Council to declare a curfew in parts of the area for a smoothoperation to be conducted.

 

The Interior CS stated that the beltbetween Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot and Baringo needs a new approach followingthe failure of current interventions. He also admitted that his ministry haddone all the possible ways in its capacity to restore peace in the Valley ofwar including asking leaders to have meetings with the community members overthe conflicts but had not borne fruits.

 

The CS noted that it is now time to takethe bull by its horns mentioning that they are going to apply fire wherenecessary warning that citizens in the area should embrace themselves for atough ride.

 

His sentiments come after a section ofleaders from the area including Elgeyo-Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen ofthe government’s failure to address the insecurity in the area.

 

The CS sympathized with the residentsnoting that the government will no longer sit and watch as citizens undergounnecessary torture
