Matiang'i Assures Heavy Policing In Areas Prone To Poll Violence

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has assured Kenyans that the government has set measures to prevent possible election violence in slums and other areas that are likely to experience political violence ahead of the August polls. The CS said that security officers are on alert and are keenly monitoring the political mood in areas prone to lawlessness and crime during this electioneering period.


Matiang’i who was addressing members of the Rotary club in Nairobi on Friday 3rd June 3, 2022, promised an increase in security surveillance mostly in informal settlements in all the major towns in the country. Members of the Rotary Club in Nairobi had earlier raised their concerns about extrajudicial killings and ethnic hostility in informal settlements.


The CS noted that reforms that have been witnessed in the security sector have placed the country in a better position than it was 10 years ago. He further added that the resources that the country has invested in the policing sector have enhanced the operations stating that the country recently procured 2700 that will improve logistics during the elections period across the country.


The super CS said that, currently, security sector in the country is balanced stating that the ratio of an officer to civilians is now at 1 to 600 down from the previous 1 to 900. He also said that the sector has received a boost by working closely with international partners in ensuring stability in the country’s security.


Matiang’i urged the leaders to be on the frontline in preaching peace during their campaigns asking for their cooperation with the security officers in ensuring the political temperatures in the country are not beyond their control. He also asked the leaders to avoid inflammatory remarks that might put the country in a deadly situation
