Magoha Censures VC Paul Wainana over KU Land Tussle

Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha has on Wednesday July 13, censured Kenyatta University Vice-Chancellor Paul Wainaina over the ongoing land dispute.

Magoha's sentiments comes just a day after claims that Wainaina resigned before any possible action that was set to be taken against the institution’s management by the government.

The VC has so far has been relieved of his duties, and the university council dissolved over going against President Uhuru Kenyatta directives.

Prof. Wainaina is reported to have denied a decision by the government to authorize the transfer of part of the university’s land to allow World Health Organization (WHO) set up the hub on the grounds adjacent to the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRH).

The Education CS said the Ministry of Education had demanded that the university avails the land which had already been subdivided by the Ministry of Lands.

"All land belongs to the government. The government owns everything, including the land I am standing on," Magoha said.

He added that the National Lands Commission had already commenced the process of preparing titles.

Magoha urged Wainaina to resign if he could disagree with the government decision.

"If I don't like what you are telling me to do, the door is wide open, I will use the legs that God gave me and I will leave," he said.

About 30 acres of land adjacent to KUTRRH  has been allocated by the government with nearly Ksh.600 million set aside towards the operationalization of the hub to facilitate the commencement of its operations.

Another 10 acres will be donated to the Africa Centres for Disease Control.

The state has also provided WHO with rent-free office space at the KUTRRH to accommodate the initial staff component of up to 150 officers needed to start preparations for the establishment of the hub.

Magoha was speaking when he presided over a   ground breaking ceremony for Competency-based Curriculum (CBC) classrooms at Pumwani boys.
