Kenyans on Twitter were treated to a laugh following an incident that occurred in Meru after residents from the Mutiribu village in the Kiangua area in Imenti South went into a panic after spotting what they thought was a lion in their midst.

It turns out that the 'lion' was a shopping bag from the Carrefour Supermarket known for its wild-life branded carriers, whose contents had filled it to the brim making it appear as if the big cat was indeed hiding in the bushes.

The residents' imaginations seemed to have run amok upon the sight of the bag, believing that they had seen the animal hunched in the shrubs and did not waste time contacting the Kenya Wildlife Services to aid in its rescue, or rather take it away and keep them safe from the predator.

Upon close scrutiny of the bag, one could not help but crack up at the naivety of the residents, as the photographs shared by Twitter user Naomi Mutua clearly tell a tale of the absurdity of the situation, as it was apparent that the bag was filled with avocado seedlings.

In one photo, a KWS officer is seen inspecting the bag, attracting thousands of reactions by Kenyans who gave their two cents over the hilarious incident.

"The person who put that there knew what they were doing," one Twitter user named Eddy Cheruto stated.

"This story has me dying with laughter today, "Sonii Ndung'u commented.

"Why did they rush to conclusions?? They would have confirmed the body and maybe some movement. Kwani it wasn't even moving the head?" another user posed.

Others pinned the funny incident on presidential hopeful Prof George Wajackoyah who has been vocal in his support for the legalization of the marijuana drug, which has been linked to hallucinations if taken in large amounts.

"This is Wajackoyah on the ground," another Twitter user stated.
