NPS Admits Killing Pakistani Journalist Sharif Amid Global Outrage

The National Police Service (NPS) has acknowledged it's role in the killing of Pakistani journalist Arshad Sharif, expressing its regret over the matter as it took responsibility for ending the renowned scribe's life in a matter of mistaken identity.

In a statement penned by police spokesperson Bruno Shioso, he detailed the incident that occured on the night of Sunday, October 24 that has sent shockwaves globally over the circumstances that the journalist was slain.

"NPS regrets to announce an incident that occurred last night along Kivenia farm/Kamukuru mamam road within Magadi. Kajiado where a foreigner national namely ARSHAD MOHAMMED SHARIFF, a Pakistan national aged 50 years was fatally wounded by a police officer while a passenger in a motor vehicle KDG 200M," the statement read.

Shioso further noted that the officers were acting on intelligence received that a vehicle had been stolen and they were in pursuit of the carjackers when the slain journalist who was in the company of his brother Khurram Ahmed approached a road barrier along the route.

"Deceased's motor vehicle came upon the police barrier which they drove through. It is then that they were shot at, fatally injuring late ARSHAD MOHAMMED SHARIFF," he stated.

NPS continued to express its regret, affirming that action would be taken to get to the bottom of the matter, while condoling with the family of the deceased.

The matter has sparked global outrage with lobby groups demanding that the incident be investigated, to shed light on the events that transpired in the run up to the killing as suspicion is rife over the same.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated that he had a conversation with President William Ruto following the murder of Sharif, asking that the head of state ensures that the investigation is open and fair

Ruto on his part vowed to fast-track the return of Sharif's body to his home country.

"Just had a telephonic call with Kenyan President William Ruto about the tragic death of Arshad Sharif in Kenya. I requested him to ensure fair & transparent investigation into shocking incident. He promised all-out help including fast-tracking the process of return of the body to Pakistan," PM Shebaz tweeted on Monday.
