Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi is facing a possible ouster after Bumula Member of Parliament Jack Wamboka declared intent to file a motion of impeachment against the CS.

While addressing members of the press at the parliament buildings on Thursday, April 25, 2024, Wamboka revealed that he has already written to National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula - notifying him of the motion to impeach CS Linturi.

Wamboka boasts the support of an alleged 110 MPs who he says have already appended their signatures in support of the motion.

His motion, he explains, is fueled by rampant "criminal activities" at the Ministry of Agriculture, citing the sugar scandal in 2023 and the ongoing fake fertiliser saga that has since rocked the country.

Wamboka argued that the two cases depict Linturi's inability to steer the country's Agriculture sector into prosperity. He urged President William Ruto to sack the CS, terming him a detriment to the head of state's national development agenda.

“You are all aware of the fertiliser scandal, and this is not the first time we are having a scandal around him; we had the sugar scandal where sugar unfit for human consumption was imported and released to the public.

“The motion is rooted on allegations on gross misconduct and loss of public trust. There is potential of criminal activities in the Ministry of Agriculture under the leadership of Linturi...it has shaken public trust in the agriculture sector," Wamboka said.

“We presented our motion yesterday, backed by signatures of 110 MPs. We hope to discuss this motion soonest, by Tuesday next week we should be done with Linturi. I am also asking the President, agriculture is key, please don't allow one rogue minister to derail your agenda, take action," he added.

Seconding the motion, Laikipia North MP Sarah Korere challenged Linturi to step aside and allow for investigations into the widescale fertiliser scandal - or risk being removed by the MPs.

The lawmaker argued that the move to impeach Linturi is neither a Kenya Kwanza nor an Azimio La Umoja One Kenya issue, rather a decision to free Kenyans from the shackles of poor leadership.

She called upon President Ruto to relieve Linturi of his duties, claiming that he is unfit to hold the office if Agriculture Minister and should never have been cleared during vetting.
