Mombasa gubernatorial aspirant Mike Mbuvi Sonko was asked to appear before the Coast Regional Police Headquarters to record a statement over the incident that occurred on Saturday, May 13 at Mkomani in Mombasa, where chaos erupted after his arrival at the Azimio One Kenya rally.

The former Nairobi governor's late arrival at the event led by the Azimio leader Raila Odinga sparked outrage from the crowd and a group of rowdy youth tried blocking him from accessing the podium.

Sonko made his appearance at the police headquarters and was questioned for hours to shed light on the matter, especially after his convoy was captured on video swerving through the crowd and his security personnel firing in the air in a bid to disperse the crowd.

He defended himself claiming that as he was making his way to the dais, his convoy was pelted with rocks which forced him to retreat and drive through the crowd at a high speed.

The fracas escalated after gunshots by his bodyguards rent the air, resulting in a stampede that left several people seriously injured and three of them were reportedly rushed to the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital for treatment.

The five-hour grilling session was to establish his resolve to gunfire to disperse the crowd, especially owing to the risk it posed to the large number of people in attendance.

Sonko declined to give a comment after the interrogation.

Leaders allied to the Wiper Party under which Sonko intends to vie for Mombasa's governorship have blamed the Orange Democratic Movement party leadership for igniting the flame, as it was reported that they wanted to bar the former Nairobi Governor from attending.

Wiper Mombasa county chair Sheikh Omar Twaha stated that from the onset, ODM gubernatorial aspirant Abdulswamad Nassir flanked by Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho was intent on keeping Sonko out of the event, especially following the political rivalry stemming from the Wiper leader's entry into the race.
