An Indian by the name of Gautam Adani is now the world’s third richest man with a net worth of about $137Billion.This is according to Bloomberg and its Billionaires index.
The Bloomberg Billionaires Index shows that Gautam Adani is the first Asian man to get into the top three of the wealthiest individuals.
Indian billionaire Gautam Adani overtook luxury goods entrepreneur Bernard Arnault on Tuesday.
Just six months ago, the college dropout was named the richest man in India and has accumulated a fortune of $6.9 Billion this year alone.
This is after a surge in the past week that catapulted him behind Tesla CEO Elon Musk whose net worth is $250Billion and Amazon CEO whose net worth is $153Billion.
In comparison to his fellow top ten dollar billionaires, he is the only one whose net worth did not drop in 2022.
However, just like many Billionaires, his net worth shot up during the global pandemic.
Gautam Adani dropped out of college at Gujarat University while in his second year to become a diamond sorter.
He was first named a Billionaire in 2008, two decades after starting his export firm.
He passed Bill Gates on the high-net-worth individuals' list after Bill Gates announced that he would be donating $20Billion to the Bill&Melinda Gates Foundation.
Adani,60, is the founder of the mining-to-energy group of companies the Adani Group. His trade is in natural gas, coal mining, and electricity generation. Experts estimate that his business might have likely benefited from the global energy price increase.
Adani Group owns India’s largest private-sector seaport and airport operator. On the other hand, it also owns a huge coal mine in Queensland, Australia.
Some critics argue that Adani may have unduly benefited from his relationship with Narendra Modi, India’s Prime Minister.
The company has also faced sharp criticism over the environmental impact of its activities at the Great Barrier Reef and the use of Billions of litres of water a year.
