Conservationists threaten to move to Court, demands Wajakoya to drop Snakes, Hyena business agenda

Wild life conservationists have threatened to move to court  to  have the Roots Party Presidential Candidate  Prof George Wajakoya withdraw his  hyena and snakes businesses from his manifesto.

The lobby group has on Friday July 8 issued a statement to Wajackoyah wanting him to strike out the agenda or take a legal action against him.

Holistic Wildlife Management Project Manager Antony Leaduma termed Wajakoya's proposals as a move to abuse their conservation concerns.

Leaduma has called on Wajakoya to withdraw his statement saying it is profiling hyenas and snakes as animals of high value that would generate revenue for the country.

“I wish to condemn with the strongest terms possible the recent statement issued by one of the presidential candidates profiling hyenas of having value to an extension up to Ksh. 6 million and this has endangered existence of hyenas in Samburu County,” said Leaduma.

He emphasized that Wajakoya's statement to have Kenya trade on  hyena and snake will expose wild animals, in areas such as Samburu  to poachers.

“Those reckless statements by Roots party presidential candidate Prof Wajackoyah have really given appetite to poachers and they are now looking for hyenas and his statement that snakes’ venom has value is endangering lives of people besides putting snakes at the risk of poachers," he added.

During his manifesto launch June 30, at the Kenyatta International Convention Center (KICC), Wajakoya said he will export hyena meat to China in a bid to boost the country's revenue streams.

According to the Roots Party leader hyenas testicles are used for medicinal purposes and are of high value if exported.

"It is said that a thousand hyenas have got about 2,000 testicles and that testicle is used for medicinal purpose in China,  and its value is about Sh6 million which is much more than ganja, therefore, we will export the testicles," he said.

Wajackoyah said this will help boost Kenya's economy and the living standards of the citizens.

While at the launch, he added that he will also venture into exporting dog meat.

"One kilogram of dog meat is six times more than goat meat and Kenya is known for exporting goat and lamb to the Middle East, therefore, we will invest in exporting dog meat," said Wajakoya.

If elected, Wajackoyah pledged to export snake meat and skin to China.

He noted that the snake raring will see the development of shoe making industry rise in Kenya.

Wajakoya also said that toxins extracted from farmed poisonous snakes are worth a fortune in the anti-venom market and can drive Kenya's economy.
