Stylish politician Mike Sonko has every reason to smile after the High Court in Nairobi on Monday 6th June 2022 granted orders stopping the IEBC's decision to bar him from contesting in the Mombasa Governor race pending the determination of a case he has filed.

High court judge Justice Ngaah Jairus directed that Sonko’s case be heard at a High Court sitting in Mombasa.

The former Nairobi Governor’s legal team has however opposed the extension, on grounds that their boss will miss out as Tuesday, June 7 is the last day Sonko can present his papers before the IEBC for clearance.

The controversial politician has accused the electoral body’s decision to block him from contesting for Mombasa gubernatorial seat terming it un-procedural, unlawful and inconsistent.

He complained that he has used a lot of money and committed immensely to the Mombasa County political campaigns and barring him from contesting is against his fundamental rights.

Sonko further said that it is prejudicial to exclude him from vying due to his impeachment, arguing that his impeachment proceedings have not been concluded and that they are currently pending at the Supreme Court.
He was impeached as the governor of Nairobi County after a long battle with the government and the Nairobi Metropolitan Boss Mohamed Mbadi which he eventually lost when the senate voted against him.

Sonko was barred alongside other two impeached leaders including former Kiambu Chief Executive Committee Member for Youth Karungo wa Thang’wa and Chitavi Mkala, former Chief Executive Officer of Malindi Water and Sewerage Company Ltd.
