Mahat Somane has become a household name during the hearing of the presidential petition at the Supreme court.

While appearing for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission,the Harvard-schooled lawyer impressed the bench as well as Kenyans alike with his diction, mastery of the law, and oratory skills.

His precision and good mastery have earned him praise and popularity in equal measure.

Under the stewardship of Mahat Somane, the IEBC was vindicated by the Supreme Court on the gross misconduct and violation of the constitution it had been accused of in Raila’s petition of 2022.

 

In the 2017 petition, Mahat Somane also appeared for the electoral commission although his efforts hit a brick wall as the entire election process was nullified in the famous Maraga ruling.

In 2017, the court relied heavily on the electoral process rather than n the final outcome-Numbers. However, in the just concluded petition, the court upheld Ruto’s election based on the final numbers as opposed to the electoral process.

Mahat Somane dismissed the allegations of the infiltration of the IEBC systems by proving the configuration of the Kiems Kit and the credibility  of the transmission systems.

Mahat Somane also brought to light the fraudulent the fraudulent affidavits of one John Githongo who submitted transmittion logs that were part of the 2017 petition.

 

Mahat Somane began his legal career at the University of Nairobi where he pursued a Bachelor of Laws and the compulsory Kenya School of Law where he did his Post-Graduate Diploma in law(2007).

He then proceeded to pursue his master's Degree in Public Policy from Harvard Kennedy School.

In 2011, Mahat Somane bagged yet another masters in law from Harvard Law School(Corporate Law and Governance)

 

Born and raised in a family of ten in Garissa County,Mahat Somane has beaten the odds sharing platforms with veteran senior counsels such as Fred Ngatia,Githu Muigai and James Orengo.

Mahat Somane also engages in CSR in his Somali hometown by helping disadvantaged households access cost-effective and efficient power.

Mahat Somane has co-founded a law firm Gerane &Somane advocates. Through his firm, he gives pro-bono legal services to start-up enterprises and marginalized citizens.
