NTSA Suspends Modern Coast Operations

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has Monday morning suspended the operations of Modern Coast buses in all its seven routes.

The NTSA announcement comes just a day after 34 people are confirmed dead following the Sunday evening accident.

"Following a fatal road traffic clash that occurred on Sunday July 24, at the Nithi Bridge, Tharaka Nithi County that has since claimed the lives of 34 passengers, the Authority hereby halts the operations of Modern Coast Express Limited," George Njao, NTSA, Director General said in a statement.

The suspension affects 31 buses plying all the seven routes across the country.

In a Monday morning update, Tharaka Nithi County Commissioner Nobert Komora also confirmed that 10 people had survived the grisly crash, but cautioned that the number of fatalities could rise since they were seriously injured.

County police commander, Ms Donatha Chali, said the bodies of the dead had been moved to mortuaries in Chuka County Referral and Chogoria PCEA hospitals.

Meanwhile,Deputy President William Ruto and Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition party flag-bearer Raila Odinga have sent messages of comfort to family and friends of victims in the Tharaka Nithi bus accident.

In a statement by the Spokesperson of Raila’s Presidential campaign Secretariat-Makau Mutua,  the former Premier urged motorists to exercise caution and observe traffic rules while on the road.

“On behalf of our campaign, the Azimio La Umoja Coalition Party flag bearer Raila Odinga and his running mate Martha Karua send their deepest condolences to all those who have lost family, friends and loved ones in the very unfortunate and tragic incident.

“To those still fighting for their lives in hospital, we pray that they get a speedy recovery and we thank the medical personnel attending to them. This is a difficult moment for these families and our campaign prays for them to get comfort and fortitude.”

DP Ruto on the other hand prayed for strength and comfort to the bereaved families.

“My heart breaks with families of victims of the bus accident that occurred in Nithi River. May the Lord give you strength to bear this loss. Quick recovery to those injured. We urge drivers to be careful,” he said in a statement on his Twitter page.

Recovery efforts  resumed early Monday at the Nithi River bridge.

The authorities in the Eastern Region noted that efforts are underway to trace those who until now have been listed as missing.
