Raila Odinga Pays Artists Ksh 500,000 for Campaign Songs

Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Presidential flagbearer, Raila Odinga has paid Ksh 562,500 to the Music Copyright Society of Kenya as payment for a license to use local and international music during his campaigns.

The ODM leader conducted the payment process through his daughter Winnie Odinga following a meeting with the collective Management organization Licensing officer David Kiragu on May 7.

With the license, Mr. Odinga will now be able to freely use local and international music during his campaigns.

His move was lauded by the MCSK who took to their official Twitter account to express gratitude urging other political candidates to emulate them.

"It is gratifying to see that presidential candidates are complying with the Copyright Law by paying for music used in their political campaigns,

"We thank Winnie Odinga and the entire Raila Odinga Presidential team for this gesture and urge other political candidates to emulate them by making payments for the use of copyrighted musical works in their campaigns,"MCSK wrote.

Offenders who fail to comply face a fine of not exceeding Ksh 500,000 or four years in prison or both.

This is in line with Section 38(c) of the Kenya Copyright Act 2021, which states that any person who causes a literary or musical work, an audiovisual work or a sound recording to be performed in public at a time when copyright subsists in such work or sound recording and where such performances is an infringement of that copyright, shall be guilty of an offence.
