Six employees from the Kenyatta National Hospital were on Wednesday, May 25 arraigned in court to answer to the charges of the theft of cancer drugs from the hospital

The six, Emily Nyambura, Phillip Owino, Mary Mumo, Yvonne Muthoni, Rose Jepkogei, and Maureen Adongo denied the charges of conspiring to steal the cancer medication from the Kenyatta Prime Care Centre pharmacy valued at more than Kshs 4.6 million.

They all pleaded not guilty and Chief Magistrate Wendy Michemi released them on a cash bail of Ksh.500,000 or a bond of Ksh1million.

The trial magistrate directed their lawyer to file a formal application after they challenged the charge sheet that has been stamped by the Kenya police instead of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

This comes months after a 53-year-old nurse at the same hospital was arraigned in court after he was caught using a patient in a coma to steal medicine at the hospital for three months.

Joseph Onyango Joel Migundo appeared before Milimani Law Courts on January 15, 2022, where he was charged with committing the offence on dates between October 2, 2021, and December 9, 2021, at the hospital.

Migundo allegedly stole 12 bottles of Human Albumin Solution within this period all valued at Ksh 81,600 using the name of the patient and was nabbed during an ambush by the hospital’s staff, where they established that the accused was adding a specific medicine to the treatment prescribed to a patient.

On him were four bottles of the said drugs.

He was charged with the theft of the medication as well as handling stolen property and was released on a cash bail of Kshs 50,000.
