It was a dramatic scene at the Azimio One Kenya rally at Mkomani in Mombasa County after Wiper gubernatorial aspirant Mike Mbuvi Sonko arrived at the venue only to be met by an irate crowd of Azimio supporters.

His convoy was attacked while he tried to make his way into the venue, and police were forced to fire in the air and lob tear gas canisters at the crowd in a bid to try and disperse them.

Sonko had made a prior announcement that he would be attending the event in support of the Azimio leader Raila Odinga, and also added that he would be in the company of incumbent governor Ali Hassan Joho and ODM gubernatorial aspirant and Mvita MP Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir.

He was then forced to retreat and his convoy dangerously drove through the crowd, which was condemned by leaders at the event including Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu,  who castigated him for endangering their lives.

The former Nairobi governor is said to have arrived at 3.30 pm which was quite late as the Azimio team led by Odinga was already at the grounds and local leaders had begun addressing the crowd.

Further, the reverberation of his convoy seems to elicit excitement and unrest from the different parts of the crowd, which escalated to blanket disdain for the Wiper leader after a section of the youth allied to him began demanding access to the podium.

This did not seat well those allied to Mvita MP Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir, who blocked the former county boss from alighting from his vehicle.

This was his cue to leave after a tussle broke out between the two rival groups, with police shooting in the air to make way for his exit.  However, upon his departure, calm was restored and the rally went on uninterrupted.

This, therefore, signals more than a political rivalry between the two leaders who are going head to head in the race, with Sonko already amassing substantial support despite his late entry and Nassir competing to maintain the lead in the polls.
