The United Kingdom has issued a travel advisory on Kenya, warning its citizens against visiting five areas across the country over fears of insecurity and terrorism activities.

In an alert dated Friday, April 5, 2024, the UK Commission in Kenya cautioned British nationals against visiting the Kenya-Somalia border, Eastern Garissa, Mandera, Lamu and Tana River Counties.

"FCDO advises against all but essential travel to areas within 60km of Kenya’s border with Somalia. FCDO also advises against all but essential travel to areas of Tana River County north of the Tana River, up to 20km northwest of the A3.

"FCDO advises against all but essential travel to within 15km of the coast between the Tana River and the Galana (Athi-Galana-Sabaki) River," the advisory read in part.

The advisory, however, excluded parts of Lamu County; Lamu Island and Manda Island.

The UK advisory comes shortly after Australia through its Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade on Friday, April 5, cautioned its citizens planning to travel to Kenya, citing a surge in terror activities.

“We continue to advise exercising a high degree of caution overall due to the threat of terrorism and violent crime.

“Terrorists continue to maintain a strong interest in attacking foreigners in Nairobi and other major population centres in Kenya," the statement read in part.

Australia singled out the counties of Mandera, Garissa, Wajir, and Lamu. The Aussie nation also cautioned tourists against Malindi, claiming that there is a surging cloud of insecurity due to terror attacks.

It adviced its citizens to abide by security guidelines issued by Kenyan authorities. It further advised them against exposing themselves to huge crowds or political gatherings.

"Violent crime occurs, including carjackings, kidnapping and home invasions. Don't walk around after dark. If you live in Kenya, invest in strong personal security measures," the notice read in part.
