CNN reported that 4 inches (100mm) of rainfall fell in Dubai over a period of 12 hours on Tuesday, which according to the United Nations data equals the amount of rainfall the city usually receives in a year.

On Tuesday, social media was awash with images and videos of the Dubai Airport, recently ranked as the second busiest in the world, submerged in water. Terminals turned to lakes, paths and roads turned to rivers, as locals and tourists fled to safety leaving their cars auditioning for submarine duty.

The Middle Eastern nation is currently experiencing the heaviest rainfall in nearly 75 years.
