Liz Truss Resigns As UK Prime Minister After Six Weeks In Office

Liz Truss resigned on Thursday following a failed budget and turmoil that saw her Conservative Party revolting.

“We set out a vision for a low tax, high growth economy that would take advantage of the freedoms of Brexit…I recognize though ,given the situation ,I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party.I have therefore spoken to His Majesty the King to announce that I am resigning as leader of the Conservative Party.”Liz Truss noted.

She was forced to shelve her plans which included billions of unfounded tax cuts that caused the pound to lose value.

She also noted that she got into power at a time of global economic turbulence and instability with the Ukraine war and the rising of prices of commodities worldwide.

However, the prime minister recounted her achievements while she was in office as reversing the rise in national insurance, taxation on workers and companies as well as availing assistance for energy bills.

Liz Truss was in office only for forty five days ten of which normal business was interrupted by the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

She sets a new record of being the shortest-serving prime ministers in British history.

The former record holder for shortest term as Prime Minister was George Cabning who served for 119 days before passing on.

While announcing her resignation Liz Truss stated that her successor would be selected by her Conservative party in the next week.

She said she would remain as prime minister until a successor is chosen.

The challenge however is the division amongst the party with no consensus of the most suitable candidate to take over the mantle.

Graham Brady expressed confidence that are suitable sucessor will be identified through ballot before the lapse of next week.

Several lawmakers from the Conservative party had already issued votes of no confidence in her leadership to Graham Brady  the chair of the 1992 committee.

In the short stint of her tenure the Conservative Party’s ratings have drastically gone down.

A pollster(YouGov) reported that she topped the list of most unpopular prime ministers.
